Hours before the 2023 Montgomery Brawl captured national headlines, a group of Black women gathered at the same historic riverfront to honor their enslaved ancestors in a healing ceremony—the culmination of a women's conference focused on collective restoration. "The Women at the Water: The Magic Before the Montgomery Brawl" documents the 24 hours surrounding what has been dubbed the "Fade in the Water" and the convergence of past and present, following the filmmaker who led this ancestral veneration, only to discover its unexpected connection to a racially charged confrontation that erupted. The film explores how a sacred ritual of remembrance became enmeshed with a modern civil rights melee through eye-witness interviews and event footage.
